FoF39: Fuji-Q Highlands
Description: Day 225 in Japan: Fuji-Q Highland.
Living in Japan really wouldnt be complete with out visiting a theme park. Just with in the sparsely populated (for Japan) Mount Fuji area we have:
-Fuji-Q Highland
-Fuji Safari Park
-GrinPa/Yeti
-Fuji Childrens World
But by far the most popular theme park is Tokyo Disney Land/Disney Sea. I personally avoid it but am told that it crazy crowded. This is not surprising since I know several adults, with no children, who go to Disney Land several times a year. I frequently have disagreements with them that boil down to this:
Me: But its for children.
Everyone else: No, its for adults too.
Why are theme parks so popular in Japan? There are a couple of theories on that, which are both kind of dark. One is that they go to theme parks because real Japan is ugly. The country has cemented over all the rivers, replaced forests with cedar plantations, bulldozed any historic buildings other than shrines and replaced them with ad covered buildings and exposed wires. Theme parks are the only choice for recreation. The other theory is because Japanese have a child like nature. With an overwhelming nanny state and hello kitty cute replacing art, the difference between things designed for children and adults is academic.
OK, maybe thats a bit harsh. I did enjoy the roller coasters.
