Una Noche Idishe - Papirosn
Description: On October 20, 2007 Yiddishkayt Los Angeles presented UNA NOCHE IDISHE, a celebration of the rich Jewish/Yiddish culture of Argentina. This boisterous, trilingual evening of dance, film, Yiddish tangos, klezmer music, theater and comedy played to two sold out audiences at REDCAT, the Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theater in the Walt Disney Concert Hall Complex. This segment features Divina Gloria singing "Papirosn" (Cigarettes), a Yiddish song written by Herman Yablokoff about an orphan boy selling cigarettes in the rain in German-occupied Grodno during World War I. The performance featured artists that embrace both their Eastern European Jewish and Argentine identities, including Los Angeles-based Argentine clarinetist Gustavo Bulgach and his Grammy-nominated ensemble Klezmer Juice, popular Argentine singer and actress Divina Gloria, and Schwee Miguel with dancers from his Tango Ganas dance company. Choreography
Description: Chun-Yu Lin has received Bachelor of Fine Art in Dance from California Institute of the Arts in 2007. In her academic years, she was awarded scholarships from Calarts, Jacob's Pillow summer school, Doug Varone Workshop and San Francisco Conservatory of Dance. As a Choreographer, Lin's works have been shown at Sharon Disney Lund Theater as well as at Roy and Edna Disney/Calarts Theater (RedCat) in Los Angeles yearly since 2004. Her Choreography was also shown at The Place in London, during her times as a selected exchange student at London Contemporary Dance School in 2006.

Description: A film i wrote, directed and starred in,. with indespensable help from my friends Zak Forrest and Gary Nardino. Anthropomorphically announcing the arrival of the R.E.D.C.A.T. (Roy and Edna Disney Cal Arts Theatre) to downtown Los Angeles, while Madlib handles the score.

Description: 29 April 2004 Spring Music Festival California Institute of the Arts REDCAT Roy and Edna Disney | CalArts Theater Los Angeles, California Sekaa Gong Burat Wangi I Nyoman Wenten, Artistic Director Nanik Wenten, Dance Director Talakalam, for tabla soloist and gamelan gong kebyar (1999) Hindustani and Balinese musics are compatible in many ways and have some common roots, but history has seen to their obvious differences. I have tried to build musical structures that contrast the improvisational freedom of solo tabla performance with the combined leadership and improvisation of Balinese solo kendang and the rehearsed precision of modern Balinese gamelan. All of this is shaped with a Western concern for development, unity, and dramatic curve. The magic of wordplay and imbedded meanings permeate the literary traditions that link Indian and Balinese thought. "Talakalam" is an invented name that contains, reading both forwards and backwards, Sanskrit, Balinese and Indonesian words for musical meter (tala), mind (akal), time (kala), serene (kalam), nature (alam), and musical instrument (alat). It is also, save for the first and last letters, a palindrome symmetrical around K. This reflects the architecture of the music, which, though not palindromic, is structured so that the middle and ending are transformed returns of the beginning. Make of that, what you will. Poor Carl, you can't help but feel sorry for him...
