Review of Disney’s Enchanted

Enchanted Movie PosterMy family contributed to the strong opening weekend of Enchanted much to my chagrin. I wasn’t too excited to go see a film about a princess staring Patrick Dempsy (screams chick flick). However, due to too much turkey and apple pie, I relented. Turns out the movie was better than bad, it was good.

It starts as a regular animated story of a princess finding true love’s kiss akin to a Sleeping Beauty mixed with the woodland creatures of Snow White. The animation seems rushed and maybe too computer aided, but it works because you know the whole movie isn’t going to be in 2D drawings. When the evil step-mother (Cinderella anybody?) decides that she doesn’t want anyone marrying her son and taking over her throne, she turns into an old hag and pushes the princess into the real world.

I was fully expecting this to be an innocent person lost in a strange city like Will Farrell in Elf, but it was more. The princess was able to retain her powers of likability - even with the woodland creatures (or in New York, rats). My favorite scene is when the princess busts into song in the park. Like all good animated movies, starting a song means everyone joins in and starts singing and dancing. Despite this being the real world, the same held true here. It was reminiscent of the duet between Simba and Nala at the beginning of the Lion King, but pulled off wonderfully with live actors.

I’m still not sure if this is a “go out and see it in the theatre” movie, but admittedly I find very few of those these days. However, if you are looking for a family or date movie, this is a good choice.

Eating at Disneyland

I’ve come to the realization that eating in the park isn’t “that” expensive. When we sit down to eat in the park and buy two adult meals and two kids meals, the price is consistently around $30. I’ve been paying attention here in Phoenix to our recent eating-out expenses. Most places we eat at the bill is between $20 and $30 for basically the same thing - two adult meals and two kids meals. I’m talking about casual dining like Red Robin, Macaroni Grill, and even Chuck E Cheese which I would say is comparable to the quality food you get at places like the French Market, Rancho del Zocalo, and Redd Rockett’s Pizza Port.Â

The biggest difference are beverages. This is where the bill will creep up on you if you’re not careful. The kids meals come with drinks, but due to price, we usually only purchase one adult drink to share. Typically, this is a bottle of water that is easy to take with us and we don’t have to worry about it spilling in the stroller. Also, we avoid buying snacks with our meals. Almost all the cashiers have cookies, rice krispy treats or some sugary snack at their station. Heath concerns aside, these are expensive. Plus, don’t go for the souvenir cups if trying to save on cash.

We also avoid the temptation of the snack stands throughout the park. Buying a snack for everyone can easily be half the price of a full meal. Plus the crash after the sugar wears off is hard to deal with.

When we go in a few weeks, we are going to see exactly much we can avoid eating in the park. I think this is more experimental than necessity. How do you deal with eating in the parks?Â

Disneyland Sleeping Beauty Castle Snow Show

I received my annual passholder newsletter today and read about this new holiday experience. The holiday decoration on Sleeping Beauty’s Castle looks great this year, but each night they do a show that simulates snow. Apparently, this is for the tikes that can’t make it through the fireworks show to see the “real” snow. Anyway, youtube user chrisaustx has posted a video where he captured it on video.Â

Parking at Disneyland

When driving to Disneyland, you have several choices for parking. If you are staying at one of the official Disneyland hotels, there are designated parking spots to park you car in during your stay. You can then either ride the monorail or walk to the park of your choice. However, if you are staying elsewhere, you have a few options.

  • Anaheim Resort Transit: The trolley is a quick and efficient way to get from most good neighbor hotels to the park. They will pick you up at the hotel’s entrance and drop you off at the main gate. They run every 15 minutes to 30 minutes depending on the time of year. The cost is reasonable: Kids 9 and under are free. 9 and over can get a pass at the following rates:
    • 1 day - $3
    • 2 day - $6
    • 3 day - $8
    • 5 day - $12

Remember, this is per person. Most the good neighbor hotels sell the tickets. The biggest drawback is you have to catch the trolley. If you miss it, you may be waiting 20 or more minutes before it comes around again. And this is on both sides, leaving your hotel and leaving Disneyland. Also, if you go during peak season, fitting everyone on with strollers and such can become a mess.

  • Pumba Parking Lot: The entrance to this parking lot is off of Disney Way. It’s a decent size lot but may only be open on busy days (Fri-Sun) depending on the season. There is no tram or shuttle from this lot to the main gate so be prepared for the walk. The walk isn’t too difficult and is probably faster than catching a shuttle in pure time. You basically have to walk down Disney Way and Down Harbour to the main gate.
  • Timon Parking Lot: Take the Lion King tram to and from Disneyland. Entrance is off of Harbour Blvd. $11 per car. This is the best lot for quick shuttle access and the shuttle ride is short. Use this lot if you can. It may fill up fast and close early.
  • Mickey and Friends Parking Structure: This is a massive parking garage. Once there, take the tram to Downtown Disney (this puts you as close to the main gates as you can get). $11 per car. The garage is huge with lots of spaces but you’ll have to deal with stairs, elevators or escalators. Shuttles run frequently but will get full. The tram ride is scenic with a few decorations but rather long.
  • Pinocchio Parking Lot: Located right outside the Mickey and Friends Parking Structure, this lot is usually unavailable. However, if you are returning to the park after 3 or 4 pm, give it a look. It has the same pros and cons as the garage except you don’t have to mess with the going up and down floors.

Celebrate the 70th Anniversary of Snow White with Exclusive Online Video and Exhibition

In honor of the 70th Anniversary Walt Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Great American Ink has created an online video and exhibition that you can see at their site. Snow White was Walt’s first feature length film and he received much criticism while making it, even from his wife Lilian. But, obviously, taking a big risk and having a great vision paid off.

My Friends Tigger & Pooh Super Sleuth Christmas Movie

Tigger and pooh Christmas MovieThis “just in time for the holidays” DVD features all the lovable character’s from the 100 Acre Woods except Christopher Robin. A young girl by the name of Darby takes his place in this 3D computer animated version based off the Disney Channel kids show with the same name.

In Super Sleuth Christmas Movie, Roo and Lumpy find Santa’s missing toy bag along with a stray reindeer. The gang must help the little reindeer get back to Santa with the toy back to save Christmas. By persevering some hardships along the way, they are all rewarded with very special gifts from Santa.

The DVD also contains two bonus episodes of the My Friends Tigger and Pooh television show. It also contains a DVD game where the viewer gets to choose one of four courses to snowboard down collecting presents along the way. At the end of the course, you must help decide which gift goes with which character.

My kids enjoyed watching the Christmas episode as well as the bonus episodes. None of the three are available on iTunes as of yet, so for $19.99 you are getting episode you can’t get anywhere else. I would assume that the bonus episodes will air on the Disney Channel this season, but I’m not sure if the Christmas episode will be made available. Priced near or at the same price as Disney feature films, I would probably rather purchase “Meet the Robinsons” or “Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End.” However, if you have younger toddlers with shorter attention spans, this might be the DVD for you.

* Disclosure - I received a free evaluation copy of this DVD from Disney’s PR group *

Mickey’s Halloween Treat

Mickeys Halloween Treat
On October 30th, my family and I attended Mickey’s Halloween Treat in Disney’s California Adventure. We have annual passes but we thought the kids would love it, so we paid the extra $27 per person for the tickets. The idea of trick or treating from Disney characters sounded too fun to pass up.

DCA closed at 5:00 PM to prepare the park and reopened at 6:00 PM. There wasn’t much of a line to get into the park. Once in, they handed each of us a trick or treat bag…it was a little bigger than a brown paper lunch bag. We also got a special Mickey’s Halloween Treat map. The map showed all of DCA, but also showed where each of the trick or treat stations were as well as the location of character meet and greets and Mickey’s Hide and Go Treat Trails. Since most the traffic was heading to Candy Corn Acres and beyond, we took a right and headed towards California Soarin. We hit our first station just pass the attraction queue line.

Mickeys Halloween Treat Trick or Treat StationI was shocked to see the two cast members grab two full handfuls of candy to put in each of our bags. They definitely were not being stingy. I was a little disappointed that there wasn’t characters helping hand out candy, but oh well. Heading further up the right side of the park, we came to the first Hide and Go Treat Trail. It was located at the entrance to Grizzly River Run and snaked through part of the ride’s queue area. About every 100 yards or so there was a trick or treat station. After about 5 stations, we exited near the Redwood Creek Challenge, the second Hide and Go trail. After going through that station, we must have hit a total of 12 of the 25 treat stations since entering the park. All our bags were over flowing and heavy.

Mickey and Minnie at HalloweenAfter realizing we had enough candy to last us until next year, we decided to wait in the line to get the kids photo with Mickey and Minnie. The line lasted about 30 minutes and was a good chance to stop, eat some candy and relax. Once during the line, Mickey and Minnie took a five minute break but Cruella and some cowboys were walking the line keeping people entertained.

Next we headed over the Pacific Wharf where they had decorated in a pirates theme and called it Pirate Wharf. There was a live band and fun games and activities for the kids.Next we hit “a bug’s land” and waited in line to ride Heimlich’s Chew Chew Train and Flik’s Flyers. I don’t think I have ever waited in a line at either of those two rides, but we had to this time. It was still less than 10 minutes though.

After that we headed to the front of Sunshine Plaza to wait for “Mickey’s Trick or Treat of the Street” Cavalcade Parade. The parade was a little late and by then the kids were about done. It was a small parade with just a few floats. The characters did get down and interact with the kids a la the Block Party Parade.

Mickeys Cavalcade Parade
Overall, it was a lot of fun. I’ve been in the park when it wasn’t crowded but they purposely limited the crowd for this event. It was pretty neat to be in the park with that few people - I imagine that it’s similar to grad night. They had music playing through out the park the entire night. I was able to make out the following songs:

  • Elephants on Parade - From Peter Pan
  • Woozles Song from the Pooh Hunny Pots ride
  • Grim Grinning Ghosts - From the Haunted Mansion
  • Monster Mash
  • This is Halloween - From Nightmare Before Christmas

They also interspersed Disney pop artists throughout.

The candy selection was very nice. They had a wide mix of chocolate and hard candies as well as bags of carrots and apples. The candy was plenty and if we wanted to, we could have left with twice as much as we did. I’m not sure if we will go back next year…I’m looking forward to trick or treating in our neighborhood but I do recommend it. I have more photos which I will be posting up shortly.

The Disney Fan Network

John Frost over the TheDisneyBlog.com has created The Disney Fan Network. It aggregates the member blogs into one feed as well as adds a search engine to be able to search them. Seems like a great tool for Disney fans to keep up on multiple blogs at once. If you’re interested, I’ve added the badge in the left sidebar. It’s not very attractive but hopefully you will find it useful. Let me know what you think and thanks John for setting it up.

Remember…Dreams Come True Fireworks on the Storybook Land Canal Boats

IMG_6429.JPG

This last week, we got very lucky. We were hitting some Fantasy Land attractions on Saturday night during the fireworks show so we could avoid some wait times. We happen to time our trip on the Storybook Land Canal Boats so that the “Remember…Dreams Come True” fireworks started right when we got to Cinderella’s Castle - this timing was by complete accident. To our surprise, the cast member manning the boat stopped to allow us to watch the fireworks. I guess this is the proper protocol as all the boats stopped. It was a real treat to sit on the boat and watch fireworks from both sides (the majority launched from inside Mickey’s ToonTown and some launched from the closed part of Fantasy Land - Sleeping Beauty’s Castle I believe).

While the seats got a little hard after a bit, it was a truly unique experience. I’m not sure how you can try to time this since the length of the line and how fast the queue is moving determines when you get on. Anyway, it was pretty awesome.

To become the most notorious pirate, players must forge alliances, hunt for buried treasure, battle evil undead forces, and use cunning and strategy to outwit their foes.

Game features include:

  • Build a notorious crew or guild – Players band together with others for expanded adventures and added power, forming a crew for quick battles or joining a guild for longer-term strategy.
  • Grow your wealth with money and rare items – Hunt for buried treasure including gold, precious gems and mysterious artifacts.

The successful Pirates of the Caribbean film franchise, including Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl (2003), Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest (2006) and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End (2007), has grossed close to $2.7 billion at the worldwide box office.

Pirates of the Caribbean Online, developed and published by Disney Online, is rated E10+ and features lower PC and Mac system requirements than most other games in this genre, allowing for easier access to a broader audience of players.

Players can download the game directly and access additional information at the game’s Web site, www.PiratesOnline.com. A portion of the game is available for free and players can get unlimited access for a monthly subscription fee. At launch, Disney Online is offering new players subscriptions to Unlimited Access for a first-month fee of $4.95 and continuing with a $9.95 fee for following months

I had previously blogged about this almost a year ago. I hope they got it right considering how long it took them.

AfterTheMouse.com - Disney Cast Members get their own independent web community

I received an email from Tim, the owner of AfterTheMouse.com. Here is what he had to say about his new site:

For more details contact:

Tim Jennings (site Owner)

(Rather than post his email address, contact me if you want it)

London 30th October

Disney Cast Members get their own independent web community.

After the Mouse is an independent, non-Disney affiliated community portal for past and present Disney Cast Members.

The site was founded to answer the one question guaranteed to be asked at any Disney Reunion, “I wonder what happened to that kid we used to work with…?”

The site is founded by English ex-Cast Member Tim Jennings who says “The idea behind the site is simple; many of us who worked for the Mouse have very fond memories of this special time in our lives, and the friends we made. The community allows members to find each other, make contact and renew friendships.”

The community is open to all Cast Members regardless of where or when they worked. Parks, Resorts, and Disney Store employees are all welcome to join and find their place in the group.

Blogs

Blog posts and links to http://afterthemouse.com/ would be really appreciated. All links will be reciprocated. Specialized blogs of particular interest may be added to our “news and Rumor” pages

Since I am not an ex-cast member (just a wanna be), this site isn’t for me. However, if you are, check it out and give Tim some feedback.
