Cory Doctorow has a book review of this Walt Disney Biography by Neal Gabler over at BoingBoing. It’s worth a read if you are interested in this book. Here’s the intro:
I’ve just finished Neal Gabler’s stupendous biography, “Walt Disney: The Triumph of the American Imagination.” I have a funny relationship to Disney — the man and the company — I am a gigantic fan of the themeparks, but I’m entirely indifferent to the characters, the animation, the live films, and I have nothing but antipathy for the political meddling in the copyright system. But if you’re a fan of the Disney parks, it’s inevitable that you end up spending some time thinking about Disney the man.
Dr. Stephen Clarke-Willson has a great page showing pictures he has personally taken of each Disney Castle from Disneyland, Disney World, Tokyo Disneyland, and Disneyland Paris. He visited all the parks in one year. Unfortunately, Disneyland Hong Kong wasn’t open yet so no photo there. Anyway, check it out.
As a follow up to Lucky the roaming Dinosaur, Imagineers have released their latest creation. Balancing on two wheels, Dr. Honeydew and Beaker roll through California Adventure interacting with guests. These free roaming animatronics are awesome. I have yet to see either Lucky or this new one in person, but they make me want to make the trip just for the experience. I think the Lighting McQueen and Mater character cars are along the same lineage and were awesome to see in person.
Ward Kimball, famed Disney animator and close friend to Walt Disney, shared Walt’s passion for railroads. Apparently, Mr. Kimball like to visit Virginia City in Nevada to ride the V&T Railroad. He took the time to even draw a nice map of it. Check it out here.
